The next morning I bring Ansel toast and berries in bed, just like his mother requested. The big smile he gives me is priceless. I get to have a lifetime of those smiles—of making him happy each and every day.

I sit at the end of the bed and flip the blankets off his feet. The first few times I gave him a foot rub, he told me not to worry about it. Now he understands that I’m going to insist upon it.

“When can I meet your alpha mother?” I ask.

He sets the plate on his nightstand. “Uh, I don’t know. We’re kind of in a fight right now, because she fired me.”

“What? I thought you worked for your omega mother.”

He picks up a piece of toast and takes a bite, chewing slowly. Are there still more secrets between us? What is he not telling me?

“I work for both of them. My omega mother lets me live in the apartment above her shop in exchange for working the morning shift at her store. I used to be an intern for my alpha mother’s clothing company. But recently I asked for a promotion, and she fired me because she wants me to move to New York to pursue a career in fashion design and find a mate.” He says this carefully, like he’s worried I’m going to be upset.

“Do you want to move to New York?”

He shakes his head. “But unless you want to move to my apartment, I don’t know how much I’ll be able to contribute financially until I figure out what I’m going to do.”

I stop massaging his foot. “Ansel, it’s fine. I don’t need you to contribute financially. You said you wanted children, right? I would be fine being the breadwinner, if you wanted to stay at home with them.”

His big smile returns, and he pulls his foot away from me, leaning over to shove me. “Stop being so perfect all of the time.”

I grab him and wrap my arms around him. “You first.”

“Oh my God. We’re nauseating, aren’t we? People won’t be able to stand being around us because we’re so sappy.”

“I don’t care.”

Ansel kisses me. I should be getting ready for work, but I don’t want to leave this bed. It’s Ansel who eventually breaks the kiss.

“There’s one other thing I have to tell you. And you have to promise to believe me when I tell you it doesn’t matter. I want to be with you anyway.”

There’s another secret. One that’s bad enough he’s worried about telling me.

“My alpha mom is sort of… particular about certain things. One of the reasons she wanted me to go to New York was to find a Blood Mate. That’s important to her. She may be rude to you.”

I kiss the top of his head. “I can handle rude people. I run a grocery store, remember? I’ll work hard to win over your alpha mother. I promise.”

Ansel is worth whatever I have to do to help his mothers be at peace with this.
